June 16, 2009The Florida Transportation Builders’ Association (FTBA) has granted Bermello Ajamil & Partners, Inc. (B&A) the 2009 “Best in Construction” award of a “Major Bridge” for the N.W. 12th. Avenue Miami River Bridge project.  An awards breakfast will be held during the FTBA’s annual convention taking place this year at the Boca Raton Resort and Club, Boca Raton, Florida, from August 13th. to the 16th.

The Florida Department of Transportation’s $67 Million project was a near three-year undertaking for B&A that called for the construction administration related to the replacement of an existing 80-year-old bridge over the Miami River with two double-leaf bascule bridges.  The new structure incorporates 4 new driving lanes to alleviate heavy traffic congestion on the busy Miami corridor and increases vessel clearance to 24 feet. 

The control tower was redesigned to incorporate the modern aesthetic elements of its surrounding area and provides new signalization, lighting, drainage and a riverwalk that enhances residential and business interaction along the one-mile stretch.

B&A has developed an expertise in movable structure construction, with the successful completion of bascule bridge projects for the Venetian Causeway, 79th Street Causeway, SW 2nd Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard.

 

July/August 2008 – Bermello Ajamil & Partners has been named one of 2008’s Top 50 Exporters by Hispanic Business Magazine.  Coming in at 19, B&A is also named as the third fastest-growing exporter by the publication.

July 16, 2008 – B&A’s Miami Intermodal Center (MIC) project, a $78 million undertaking that will see, among other things, the construction of Miami International Airport’s main collector and distributor arterials, has received the Florida Transportation Builder’s Association (FTBA) award for “Florida’s Best in Construction” in the category of Major Interchange.

B&A was the Prime Consultant in charge of coordinating all phases of construction for this interchange which included 11 bridges in total, 7 guided ramps, 112,000 SF of MSE walls, 5 major signalized intersections and over 283,250 square yards of new roadway; it also included 7.500 lineal feet of pressurized water main spanning the entire length of the project traversing bridges, canal section, and expressway ramps.

May 16, 2008 – The 2008 Cityscape Middle East Real Estate Awards announced top honors to The World Islands in Dubai in the category of Future Waterfront Development during the May 13th awards ceremony at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi. The award was bestowed on Nakheel Development, LLC, one of the largest real estate developers in the Middle Eastern region and owner of the world-famous development.

A panel of internationally acclaimed industry professionals was assembled to judge the entries which had been sorted into eleven distinctive categories. Overall, the entries were judged on their contribution to world architecture culture, invention and imagination, respect for people and environmental awareness in emerging and developed countries throughout the Middle East and North Africa.

Although the competition was extremely fierce, with an extraordinary amount of talent showcased in several projects that night, the awards celebrate excellence by rewarding truly exceptional achievements and thereby raising the bar for the industry as a whole.

May 14, 2008 – Bermello Ajamil & Partners, Inc. (B&A) continues to broaden their global portfolio of port and maritime projects with the recent announcement that The Singapore Government has selected B&A, in a joint venture with RSP Architects Planners & Engineers (Pte) Ltd (RSP) of Singapore, to design the new International Cruise Terminal (ICT) at Marina South in Singapore.

Responding to the dramatic increase in projected passenger volumes over the next five years and the need to accommodate the new breed of mega-size ships, B&A and RSP’s proposed design of a modern and efficient terminal will address the long-term growth in cruise operations and also serve as the catalyst for expanding opportunities that will further enhance Singapore’s Marina South waterfront.

With an estimated cost of $180-220 million (USD), the planned ICT development will include a new twin terminal building, a two berth finger pier capable of handling the largest of cruise ships currently in service and the next generation of cruise ships currently in production. This will position the Singapore Port as one of the few world destinations with the capabilities to efficiently handle this combination of fleet classes. 

In close proximity to the Central Business District and Marina Bay, B&A and RSP’s design and development of a vibrant cruise facility at Marina South will provide opportunities to integrate outstanding architecture, function, economic impact and urban revitalization, providing an essential world class cruise tourism platform for residents and visitors of Singapore.

December 5, 2007 – Bermello Ajamil & Partners, Inc. (B&A) has been selected as the Architect for the expansion of Terminal 18 at Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades. The $37.4 million expansion is a result of the recent agreement between Broward County and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL) to provide a new homeport for the Genesis class of ships; the newest and largest cruise vessels ever constructed.  The terminal will be designed to process over 12,000 people in an eight hour period, far surpassing the capacity of other terminals with nearly half of that processing capacity.  This will be the largest and most efficient terminal ever built.

RCL’s Genesis class vessels will be the largest in the world and will carry over 6,000 passengers; a 48% increase in capacity over their current largest line of ships, the Freedom class. At a cost of $1.2 billion, the first of the 220,000 gross ton ships will launch in the fall of 2009, the second ship at $1.4 billion is expected to set sail in 2010.

October 18, 2007 - Partner, Juan Hernandez (“Tony”) has been named President Elect of the Miami Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society (FES).  Formal inauguration took place on October 18, 2007.  Tony is one of our most accomplished project engineers working with B&A Construction, responsible for some of B&A’s largest and most complex undertakings.

October 16, 2007 - B&A was extremely delighted to have participated in Cityscape Dubai 2007.  The event, now in its 6th year, took place in Dubai from October 16th through the 18th and welcomed more than 50,000 regional and international investors, property developers, governmental and development authorities, leading architects, designers, consultants and senior professionals from more than 120 countries. More than 1,000 exhibitors showcased their projects and services on 70,000 SQM of exhibition space.

June 12, 2007 - The Diamond Princess became the first ship to dock at Ketchikan, Alaska’s new Berth III.  This new berth is the result of years of work by Bermello, Ajamil & Partners assisting the City of Ketchikan with the development of its master plan, business negotiations and feasibility studies used for the sale of Bonds and finally Construction Management Services for the project.  read more

June 7, 2007 - Bermello Ajamil & Partners (B&A) has announced the opening of a Southern California office in Long Beach. This location will serve the San Diego and Los Angeles area. Southern California is of strategic importance to B&A. The firm is currently working on a number of major assignments in this fast-growing region. This office will provide new opportunities to offer the full complement of services provided by B&A.

Bermello Ajamil & Partners is currently working on projects in Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa, North and South America and offices in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, New York, and Dubai.

June 4, 2007 - Carmelita Flores of Bermello Ajamil's Middle East office in Dubai has received accreditation for Blue Code - Building Regulations and Design Guidelines from the Civil Engineering Department (CED) and EFI International. The certification, which is offered by the UAE Civil Engineering Department of Ports, covers marinas and small craft harbor regulations in and around the Port of Dubai.

May 14, 2007 - William Brant, our Director of Engineering, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Tropical Audubon Society. The society, established in 1947, is a chapter of the Audubon of Florida and the National Audubon Society. It is a non-profit organization focusing on conservation of natural resources, especially native plants and animals and their habitat.

May 4, 2007 - Juan Carlos Bermúdez, Mayor of the City of Doral, awarded a plaque to B&A during the grand opening of Doral Community Park in recognition of outstanding architectural and landscape architectural design services. Teams: Principal-in-Charge - Eduardo Lamas / Design - Jorge Varela, Freddy Vivas / Production - Raul Carreras / Civil Engineering - Leonardo Rodríguez, Emilio Rodríguez.

B&A Opens An Office in Dubai, UAE: Due to extraordinary success in business development, B&A has opened an office in Dubai, UAE. The Firm is currently working on such important projects as Dubai Maritime Center and The World. That office is now providing services in the region including projects in the Maldives, Thailand, Kuwait, Tunisia and Turkey.

March 26, 2007 - Randy P. Hollingworth has been appointed Director of B&A's Planning and Landscape Architecture Studio: Hollingworth originally joined B&A on December 15, 2006. He brings a wealth of design talent, leadership skills and expertise in both fields, coupled with 20 years' experience.

March 20, 2007 - Carlos F. Bonzon, PhD. P.E. joins B&A as Director of Infrastructure and Municipal Services: Bonzon brings extensive experience to our Firm; having enjoyed an illustrious career with Miami-Dade County and recently retiring as Assistant County Manager where he oversaw transportation, transit, aviation and seaports. In the past, Bonzon has been the Director for the Transit Capital Program for Miami-Dade County, Director for the Miami International Airport Capital Program and has also served as Miami-Dade County's Director of Building and Zoning. In his capacity he will oversee B&A's transportation, avitiaon and municipal practice.

March 14, 2007 - Ed Palacio, P.E. joins B&A as Director of Transportation Services for South Florida. Palacio has enjoyed a long and distinguished career responsible for management of interstate projects, project coordination, design-build and post-design construction assistance for Florida’s roads and highways. Recent work includes project management for relocation of Golden Glades Toll Plaza, widening of Sawgrass Expressway and upgrade of SunPass lanes, including over 25 toll plazas throughout the State of Florida.

March 12 – 15, 2007 - B&A’s Ports and Maritime sector exhibited at the 23rd Annual Seatrade Convention. The convention is recognized as the leading cruise industry event worldwide and this year, approximately 1,000 exhibiting companies from 100 countries gathered at the Miami Beach Convention Center for this important event. Luis Ajamil, President of B&A and renowned authority on ports and maritime projects participated as guest speaker on a panel discussing Mega Ports for Mega Ships.

February 24, 2007 - Luis Ajamil, P.E. receives Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award from the Miami Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society: The award was granted in recognition of the work Ajamil and the rest of the B&A team performed on the The World project in Dubai, UAE. The World is comprised of 300 man-made islands whose aerial view forms the shape of the world map. Ajamil, together with B&A's planning, architecture and engineering teams, is responsible for the master plan of the project, design of the transportation hubs that will provide access for boats, water taxis and ferries between the islands and the mainland and the design of a number of the larger projects within The World.

February 23, 2007 – Brooklyn Cruise Terminal’s Pier 12 wins 2007 Editor-In-Chief Award from Porthole Cruise Magazine for “Best New U.S. Homeport”. The Cruise Terminal opened on April 15, 2006 by servicing the inaugural voyage of Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth II.

January 10, 2007 - Gustavo R. Quesada, PE, Partner and Director of B&A Construction Services has received the Engineer of the Year Award and Yvette Benitez-Jones, PE, also of B&A Construction Services, has received the Young Engineer of the Year Award from the Miami Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society. Both awards will be presented during a banquet to be held at the Coral Gables Country Club on Saturday, February 24, 2007.

December 11, 2006 - Bermello Ajamil & Partners' (B&A) Interior Design Studio was awarded the 2006 "Judges Award for Best Design" award from Florida International University's (FIU) Festival of the Trees Gala. The festival, which marked its 20th year with this event, is presented by FIU's School of Architecture Interior Design program and advisory board to promote greater design awareness and support design education at the FIU School of Architecture. The yearly design exhibition is a unique display of provocative "tree" creations from dozens of South Florida's premiere design and architecture firms. Proceeds from the gala benefit the Gloria Blake Interior Design Scholarship Fund at Florida International University.

October 26, 2006 - Bermello Ajamil & Partners has been named "Architecture Firm of the Year" by the South Florida Hispanic hamber of Commerce. An awards ceremony will take place on Friday, ovember 3rd during the 12th Annual Sunshine Awards Luncheon to be held at the Palm Restaurant in Coral Gables.

September 22, 2006 - Bernard Horovitz, Director of Education & Healthcare, was recently elected president of the Miami chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for 2008-2009. AIA is a nonprofit professional association with more than 77,000 members, including 14 components, or chapters, in Florida and roughly 590 members in the Miami chapter. AIA Miami stresses public awareness and appreciation of architecture and its related fields. Throughout its 60-year history, AIA Miami has strived to provide its members with the services, activities, and knowledge required to maintain dedicated to high standards in professional practice.

February 1, 2006 - Tony Melton promoted to Partner
Miami, Florida, February 1, 2006 - Bermello Ajamil & Partners promotes 22 year veteran engineer to the position of partner with the firm. Tony Melton, PE, is the partner in charge of the firms' Orlando office, while his experience in transportation engineering and in managing large scale construction projects for the firms' Transportation Engineering division is well known, his technical strength in the design of roadway projects has allowed him to move forward with some of the states most significant transportation projects for the Florida Department of Transportation. Mr. Melton is a registered engineer in Florida and Tennessee. He graduated from University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1982.
