The 79th Street Bridge, providing access to Miami, traversing North Bay Village and connecting Miami Beach, is a hurricane evacuation route. Bermello, Ajamil & Partners was awarded the Prime Consultant Contract by the Florida Department of Transportation.

The West bascule over the Intracoastal Waterway is comprised of four leaves with three lanes of traffic in both directions. The electric motor and gear assemblies, control console and armored grating were replaced, electrical system reconditioned, and traffic gates and signals added. Control house windows, roofing and air-conditioning were restored. The East bascule gained concrete barrier pedestrian separators. Lighting and electrical, traffic barriers and gates were upgraded.

The project began October of 1999 and ended February 2001, on time and within budget without claims or delays.
